1st July 2018 social ride and free members’ social event

July 1, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:30 pm

I am pleased to announce that there will be a PCC members’ social ride to Kent on the morning of Sunday 1 July followed by a lunchtime/early afternoon social event (including buffet and drink) at The Hope pub in Carshalton. The intention will be to meet at Cheam crossroads for a leisurely 09:00 ride start, planning to be at The Hope between 12:30 and 13:00. You can find a route to Cheam crossroads from East Sheen here: https://www.strava.com/routes/13717780.

There will be a choice of two routes, a shorter one of 48 miles (77 kms): https://www.strava.com/routes/13607129 and, if there is demand on the day, a slightly longer, hillier route (59 miles) for those who need more climbs: https://www.strava.com/routes/13607148.

The shorter route is still relatively lumpy as you can’t get to Kent without hitting hills somewhere, but the hills are long drags rather than steep climbs. As it is a social ride, no-one will be dropped and the groups will wait at the top of hills for everyone to catch up.

For those who don’t know The Hope, it is a community pub, owned and managed by a group of residents. It is regularly awarded the regional CAMRA pub of the year and it will be awarded the same prize (for the third year in a row) this year on 20 June. It has a large marquee in the garden which will be reserved for Pearson CC, so there will be plenty of room for all the riders and bikes. There will be a buffet from about 13:00.

The Hope is located three minutes’ walk from Carshalton Railway station, where there are regular trains to Clapham Junction, Sutton and Wimbledon, so if you’re tired and/or emotional after the social event, you will be able to get back home without riding.

If your husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, partner isn’t joining you on the ride, you are welcome to bring her or him along to join us in the pub.

As I have to make arrangements with the pub, I need to have a rough idea of numbers (including partners) in advance, so I would be grateful if you could indicate if you will be attending as soon as possible, and by 22 June at the latest, please. If you are going to be joined by your partner in the pub, please let me know.

Deb and I will be welcoming anyone who is interested to come back to our house in Carshalton Beeches (5 minutes ride from The Hope: https://www.strava.com/routes/13718130) to watch the HSBC UK National Championships, Women’s (highlights) and Men’s (live) Road Races, which are being broadcast from 3pm (we can watch ‘as live’ if we’re a bit later): https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/nationalroadchampionships/article/20180606-roadchamps-ITV-to-broadcast-HSBC-UK—National-Road-Championships-0. You will still be able to get home by train, as we are only a short walk/ride from Carshalton Beeches railway station, with regular trains to Clapham Junction, Sutton and Wimbledon (via Sutton).
